He is a distinguished anthropologist specializing in Afghanistan, Central Asia, and the Middle East. He is Professor Emeritus at Indiana University and the author of influential books including “The Kirghiz and Wakhi of Afghanistan” and “Revolutions and Rebellions in Afghanistan”. He has written more than 40 academic articles and book chapters on state–society relations, ethnic politics, Islamic movements, and the impact of international aid. His work has significantly shaped scholarly understanding of Afghanistan’s social and political structures.
