The Status of the Curriculum and the Future of Afghanistan

Bareen Initiative for Development (BID) held an online program on 3 July 2024 about “The Status of Curriculum and the Future of Afghanistan”, the speaker of this program was Manizha Bahra, a researcher and prospective doctoral student. Mrs. Bahra spoke about the importance and position of the curriculum, the curriculum has the status of a road map for students and is the main factor in creating a specific ideology and education in a society, and it facilitates the field for specialization and professionalism in the society. If the curriculum is standardized, it will provide a good platform for the intellectual education of the students and on the other hand, it will provide professional manpower to the labor market, and if a non-standard curriculum is applied, the students who graduate from this curriculum will not have a correct and correct ideology. They are not useful for the market.

Mrs. Bahra stated that the curriculum that Afghanistan has and is being implemented is not a standard curriculum, and with the implementation of that curriculum, we cannot imagine the future that our children will be able to have high capacity in various specialized fields after completing this curriculum. And their assets should be based on international standards and be able to meet the demands of the labor market.

 And by adapting the current curriculum in Afghanistan, in the future, we cannot imagine a healthy competition in the field of science and knowledge with neighboring countries and the region, nor will we have valuable scientific and research achievements.

Ms. Behera offered the following as suggestions:

  1. The curriculum must be in accordance with accepted criteria and standards;
  2. The curriculum of schools and universities must be modernized;
  3. Establish a balance between religious education and scientific lessons;
  4. Psychologically, textbooks should meet the needs of the society.
